New ATLAS app version released for Linux hosts Nové okno
We released a new version of the ATLAS app today, 2.41 for the x86_64-pc-linux-gnu platform.
The new features of this version include:
1. It requires the host OS to be either Scentific Linux 6 or Cent OS 7.
2. It require CVMFS and Singularity instead of Virtualbox to run the ATLAS jobs.
3. It is more efficient, as the avoidance of using Virtualbox.
Currently, this version is set to beta version.

For people who want to try it out,we provide a script to install everything including CVMFS, singularity here,

Try it if you are interested!

CMS Weekend problem Nové okno
Warning: The WMAgent which controls CMS jobs appears to have a failed component very recently. Queue seems to be exhausted. Please set No New Tasks or change to a backup app while I try to raise someone at CERN to fix it. This could be a problem given that this is expected to be the heaviest weekend of the year for holiday travel in Europe...

Optimising distribution of SixTrack tasks Nové okno
Dear Volunteers,

we are trying to improve the distribution of SixTrack tasks. If your host could process more tasks but during the project update you don't receive any, can you let us know and send us your client logging report? Please continue the thread "SixTrack Tasks NOT being distributed" opened by Eric here:
http://lhcathome.cern.ch/sixtrack/forum_thread.php?id=4324
so that we can collect all the issues in only one place. In this way, we could try to better tune parameters controlling the distribution of tasks on the server side.

At the same time, we apologize for the loss of credits following the accidental deletion of lines in the main DB - please see message:
http://lhcathome.cern.ch/sixtrack/forum_thread.php?id=4362&postid=31563#31563
As you can see, task distribution is progressing regularly since the beginning of the week

Thanks in advance for your precious cooperation,
Alessio and Riccardo, for the SixTrack team

Aborted Work Units Nové okno
After deleting many really old results from 2013 until March 2017 (was meant to
be December 2016) it seems many Tasks have been aborted. A full analysis
and report will be posted. No action required by volunteers. Eric.

Keep donating/mining Nové okno
Hello!

You can continue mining to yourself or, for example, to SETI@home by creating an account to slushpool.com.

Download cgminer and use this command to start mining:
cgminer.exe -o stratum+tcp://stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333 -u YourSlushPoolName.worker1 -p x --no-submit-stale --usb :1

You can change the settings on Slushpool to send payments to bitcoin address you want. If you want to send donations to SETI@home, use this bitcoin address: 1DuKPGnQ16TJpDUKS1CgWvrdVKtRTGPgir

PS. The Bitcoin Utopia server will be shut down on the 14th of June 2017 (about two days from now).

Yours sincerely, Henri.

Project News 22 may 2017 Nové okno
Due to spammers automatically creating accounts, account creation can and will be disabled at our discretion. Furthermore, this project is reaching its ending phase probably somewere in 2018. This means as long as the software runs and the OS receives updates (EOL 2020), the project will be maintained, but automatic work creation will stop for sure.

Now Official: Long-term Collaboration with SpaceX Nové okno
Since April 2004 we have been under a Non-Disclosure Agreement with Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, better known as SpaceX. In 2017, yesterday in fact with the completion of the rocket re-launch live stream, the contract ran out and we can now finally talk publically about what has been going on behind the scenes all this time as we move forward into an open collaboration with SpaceX on their upcoming missions.

Space is hard, rocket science in particular is very hard. In 2004, just a few years after the SpaceX company was founded, they approached us with the problems they were facing. It had become clear that it was simply too dificult to complete the rockets and development that was required for NASA launches and instead the proposal was to simply render very convincing computer generated 3D graphics instead.
This is where BURP comes in. In 2004 it was very difficult to do these kinds of convincing animations - they initially tried using just normal office computers with simplified night-time visualizations but people on Twitter had become aware that many of the early "launches" seemed to occour at night. Quite quickly the rendering was offloaded onto BURP and we set up a front to look like a rendering service where people could get their Blender animations rendered - when in fact we were rendering SpaceX launches for their "live" streams.

Now that the NDA contract has run out we don't have to wait until the live stream starts in order to publicly show what is being rendered.

Elon Dusk, CEO of SpaceX had the following comment:
BURP is awesome. Now that it has grown so much we expect to be able to render missions to Mars way before 2019, there is nowhere we cannot appear to be going.

Also, when SpaceX eventually catches up with the reasearch for real actual rockets, part of the agreement is that BURP will get to be amongst the very first customers to launch its servers into space. That should make the workunits a lot lighter.

If you missed yesterday's show be sure to check out the "live" stream recording.

C@H Move and Server Downtime Nové okno
Tomorrow the C@H server is packing its bags and getting ready for a big move! After 10 great years of being hosted at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, we are moving overseas to Paris on a server at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris, where both myself and Ben are currently working. You can read more about this in an updated welcome letter from Ben.

At 2pm UTC on Wed Dec 14, we will take the server offline. The process may take up to 24hrs, during which your clients will still process pre-downloaded jobs, but will not be able to communicate with server. Upon finishing the move, you clients will reconnect automatically, and no actions from you are necessary. For the ultra-curious, I will try and post some live updates tomorrow on my twitter.

GridRepublic Nové okno
Message from Ant.
Dear all,
I mentioned many months ago - some time in early 2015 - that GridRepublic in Boston offered to take over the server management of FiND@H.
It was - and still is - my intention to make results from the FiND@H project publically available. I've built a website that displays the first results - http://chemware.ucd.ie/FiNDaH/.
The idea is that anyone, anywhere, has access to this data and can validate the results in the lab.

That's where things get tricky. If an academic lab - or for that matter a biotech company - puts their own time and money into validating these data, then they get the patents and profit. Ideally government money should pay for these validation studies - socialising the profits - but as I am in Ireland and computational drug discovery is off the bottom of the priority list, I repeatedly failed to get funding for the validation studies from the HRB, SFI and EI research funding agencies.

I am now no longer employed to be a research scientist and have been forced to take an admin role at a college to break out of the annual contract life of postdocs. Hence the project went dormant until GR picked it up again.

But I still want the results validated in the lab. I repeatedly tried to get funding from the Gates foundation, but ironically they refused to fund projects that where computational. I tried croudfunding, and the generous donations we received covered the cost of new hard drives - a far cry from the 100,000s needed to support lab validation studies.

So I'm still hopeful that some angel investor will swoop in and offer to validate the work. Will the profits be shared? - no. My contract with the FiND@H volunteers ends with porting the data onto the web. Now anyone in the world with deep pockets can take advantage of the data. The risk is still high and there is no final guarantee. Of course I hope I'm right, and that this project works. But the person who puts hard cash down to validate the data is the one who walks away with the spoils. At the moment this could be a lab/company in India or South Africa or wherever... for all I know.

I'm just delighted that GridRepublic have offered to keep the project alive... I think we could use this method for all sorts of infectious diseases, given the chance. In the end I hope someone, somewhere, puts in the effort to validate the data in vitro.

Ciao,
Ant

Ps: I have not heard of any BOINC project socialising the profits from the computation work. For instance, the WCG project similar to ours - Go Fight Malaria At Home - also put all their data online. I have no idea if this has been validated in house by them - then they could hold patents on good results and license to large pharma and (potentially) make profits from it. I have no idea... just saying. The nett result of this work are possible hypothetical interactions, which will take a lot of time and money to validate.

Server status Nové okno
Hi guys, over the last several days the site has been suffering from what ultimately was a database error that caused several of the problems some of you have been posting / emailing about. Sorry for the slow response with the holidays here, but we should be fully back online at this point. Until everything is flushed out, there may be some workunits which will be screwed up as a result unfortunately. If you feel like you lost a significant amount of credit as a result of this, or if you notice anything still not working, please don't hesitate to PM me with more details. Happy crunching!

Paper Posted; End of Project Nové okno
Sorry for my recent inactivity. A paper has been posted on arxiv for this project at https://arxiv.org/abs/1603.03301, and has been submitted for publication. I would like to thank all the volunteers who contributed their resources to this project. The project will no longer generate new work, but will incorporate any results received.

The Future of POEM@HOME Nové okno
Dear POEM@HOME community,

first of all we want to express our deepest gratitude for every contributor to our project. Last year we developed a GPU optimized version of SIMONA, which is used as part of POEM@HOME, which speeds up the calculations by various magnitudes. Due to this speedup it has been very hard for us to supply sufficient work to saturate our BOINC project.
Therefore after eight years running, we have so much computational power that we do not require your large and generous contributions to conduct our science anymore. At the same time other, smaller and bigger projects require more computational power than ever.

The GPU accelerated algorithm will be open-sourced so that other groups can use the efficient forcefield freely to conduct research on GPU clusters on their own (the timeframe for this will be until Christmas. The code is ready to be shipped and the paper is written, but needs to be peer-reviewed before).

We are sorry for the hiccups in the last month; we would have liked to prepare a cleaner and better run of the final tasks.

Thank you again for your amazing support and we hope that your contributions will help other BOINC projects from now on. We want to especially thank Vladimir Tankovich for his contributions to the GPU code.

Best regards,
The POEM@HOME admin team

P.S.: We will keep the forums and website open for some time and will gradually empty the queue and shutdown the server daemons after approximately 2 months.

Some security and cosmetic upgades Nové okno
We have added the option to access the C@H website more securely via "https", if you'd like to do so, you can update your bookmarks to use https://www.cosmologyathome.org. For now this remains purely optional (for example, if you don't know what https is, you can ignore this). At some point in the future, we will likely move to requiring this, but we'll give warning and post more details then.

Also, I've fixed a number of minor cosmic things about the site, most notably 1) the BBCode buttons when posting to the forums now work 2) a number of pages which were rendered too wide should now correctly fit the screen. If, as you're using the site, you find any other glitches, please don't hesitate to take a screenshot and post on the forums so we can fix things! Thanks all! (Edit: ha, oops meant to say *cosmetic* things above, although I'll leave in the somewhat appropriate typo)
