CloudSigma supports Freehal for at least one year |
Since August 2010 the cloud computing provider CloudSigma supports the Freehal project by offering servers for free. They are used for our BOINC project FreeHAL@home and for Freehal the application.
Today CloudSigma decided to continue this support for the next 12 months. We would like to thank CloudSigma for supporting our research since
we need much resources in order to be successful in developing our artificial intelligence software.
This is a great cooperation and we are very pleased with Cloudsigma's decision to support us for the whole next year.

I am not died. |
|
I work hard on the the new Webside and the upload page. In the future user can upload the blend file and the system check and send the job. I have many changes on the server do, this makes it necessary that all users register newly. Sorry vor this circumstances. I switch to the new server at 01.03.2011 and hopefully will include the first act of Sintel. The Windows client from Boinc have now multi task support. The support for MacOS, and Linux end at this time. Why? The Luxrender must have glibc in the newest version and this is the problem from many older version of linux. I don't have found a Mac user to build the client on a Mac computer. I search for this more.

Project Downtime |
|
Sorry for the downtime, mysqld stopped unexpectedly and refused to start for a few hours (innodb problems), after a backup/restore of the whole database everything works as expected again. No data was lost.

Database problems |
|
I've had a few database problems in the last hours, and i've had to reset a few work units, but only a few hours of work were lost. So don't worry if your manager tells you a work unit was "aborted by project", just update and you'll get loads of new ones. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by that..
edit: forgot to mention - i doubled the work unit size to an interval of 100 billion per work unit to increase turnaround times.

Worker 0.02 |
|
I just released version 0.02 of the worker, for all 4 supported platforms
changes:
windows 32 bit:
- (small) performance improvement
windows 64 bit:
- no changes
linux 32 bit:
- (small) performance improvement
linux 64 bit:
- (great) performance improvement (since this is now a real 64 bit build, previously i used the 32 bit linux build on 64 bit linux systems as well)
The linux builds have lost backwards compatibility with kernels before 2.6, but i don't think this is needed anyway..

|
google code hosting for worker source code |
|
i finally found the time to set up a google code repository for the worker app.
http://code.google.com/p/milestone-rsa/
please no flaming about the crude linux build system, i'm really a noob when it comes to compiling on linux and i didn't find the time yet to teach myself writing makefiles. The 64 bit linux version is currently the 32 bit one with a different name, i'll have to look into 64 bit linux building first... (or is it as simple as compiling the code on a 64 bit system? Are there 64 bit versions of linux distros from the 1.4.x era? According to the boinc wiki worker should be compiled on such systems to improve compatibility, the current app version is compiled on that machine.)
if anyone has patches or improvements to the code, feel free to contact me, or open an issue on the google code page.
if anyone wants to compile the code for new platforms, please contact me about it, ideally it should be linked statically, but dynamic linking is also possible (read http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/AppLibraries if dynamic linking is needed!)

FreeHAL will stop sending Workunits for 6 months |
FreeHAL will stop sending Workunits to your Computers for the next 6 Months.
I'm currently in the High School and will do my Graduation in Spring 2011. Thus I won't have much time to spend with the FreeHAL@home Project.
So FreeHAL will probably have just a few or no Workunits at all for your Computers during the next 6 Months. Of cause the Project servers, the Settings, Credits, the Forums and all that stuff will stay online and will always be available to you.
Starting in June 2011 the FreeHAL Project will continue. I was hoping that this Decision could have been avoided but as I won't be available to solve issues the next Months, i think in that way I can avoid problems and issues to rise and remain unsolved.

Server problems |
| When there are any problems at FreeHAL, please keep something in mind: I'm the only one at Freehal who administrates the servers and I'm doing my Abitur
(Germany) right now, so I don't have the time I had one or two years before. If you are familiar with Linux and you would like to help us, no problem.
But if you don't, don't abuse my mailbox to blame me. Those people who do would not be able to do it better. I'm doing this in my free time and there is a lot more
to do than just looking at the servers.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT |
| QuantumFIRE will be offline for a longer period of time (4-8 weeks) starting at the end of this week to make the transition from alpha to beta test phase. Thanks a lot to all volunteers who have so far supported QuantumFIRE! Why not donate your computing power to QMC@HOME in the mean time? We will try to let you know as soon as possible, when QuantumFIRE will be available again. |

Power cut / QuantumFIRE |
| Our server was offline over the weekend after a power cut in our institute and some problems with recovery ... |

40,000 WU available next week / 40.000 problemas disponibles para la semana que viene |
| In a week or so I'll have 40,000 WU available to keep exploring the VRS pattern. I don't expect each to require too much memory (perhaps 512MB) / Mas o menos en una semana pondre unas 40.000 tareas a fin de seguir explorando los patrones de comportamiento del VRS. Expero que no requieran demasiada memoria (quizas 512MB) |

New Storage Equipment |
We are pleased to announce that new storage equipment has been ordered today. We should receive, install, and test it within the next two weeks. This upgrade is critical to allow orbit@home to continue operations and to keep growing beyond the volunteers base of 25,000 that we just recently reached. A grateful acknowledgement goes also to all the people that donates to this project, as this gives us the much needed flexibility to take care of unexpected project requirements such as this one. read more |

New WU available / Nuevos problemas disponibles |
| A new batch of WU (just a small set, about 1000) has been prepared today to explore some new alternatives in our model. Please note that those WU are higly RAM consuming (from 512MB to 2048MB) /Hemos preparado un nuevo grupo de tareas (solo unas 1000) para explorar algunas nuevas alternativas en nuestro modelo. Atención, ya que estas tareas consumen mucha memoria RAM (de 512MB a 2048MB) |

The Science of Orbit@Home |
We present here the research carried out at the orbit@home project, that focuses on producing an optimized search strategy for dedicated astronomical surveys to search for near-Earth asteroids. This work is lead by Pasquale Tricarico at the Planetary Science Institute (PSI), in collaboration with Ed Beshore, Steve Larson, Andrea Boattini at the Catalina Sky Survey (CSS), and Gareth Williams at the Minor Planet Center (MPC). read more |
