Cycles Rendering on Renderfarm.fi for everybody! Nové okno

Finally, after months of work, testing, debugging and fixing we have Cycles as a supported engine on the farm. You'll get the power of Cycles through CPU rendering on our grid, with the supported feature set. To be able to upload Cycles sessions you should make sure you have the latest uploader version, which you can find at Blender bf-extensions SVN. Place it in your Blender directory, and in there to 2.62/scripts/addons/

While Cycles renderer allows to easily render with parts, make sure you don't do postprocess compositing with the node editor, as for that the old restrictions still exist.

Since Cycles works differently from Blender Internal we can chop up the workload in two ways, before we recombine it all into the final rendering. With Blender Internal, at best we could divide the work for one frame into smaller sections of that frame. These parts would then be stitched together into the final frame. Some features of Blender Internal renderer make it quite hard to do dividing into smaller parts, especially since our grid is not build on one CPU and OS architecture.

Apart from chopping a frame into physical parts we can also divide the workload of calculating the samples. Lets say we have a session we want to render at 100 samples. We can divide the workload over 4 work units each of which will result in a 25-sample rendering.

One frame with few subsamples

By ensuring that each part is rendered with a different seed we can ensure that we don't get 4 times the same result, but instead get what we want. These subsample results we can all add together and average out so that in the end we have a 100-sample rendition of the frame.

Multiple subsample frames ready to be put together.

The nice thing is that we can do both ways of dividing the calculation work at the same time. So we can divide the frame into 4 parts and each part into 4 subsample frame work units. The stitcher will take care of placing the result parts into the end frame and average out as needed.

The final result after all subsample results have been merged.

What this means is that we can now also do high-sample renders for still, since the workload can be divided over many clients. For a 10.000 sample still we could divide the workload into 100 workunits each covering 100 samples. For huge renderers we'll probably also render it in parts, just to make sure that workunits won't be too long.

When Cycles supports the GPU properly through OpenCL, also for AMD/ATi cards, then we'll investigate how easily we can roll that out on our farm. That said, it is obvious that CPU rendering will allow us to run much larger scenes, since GPU RAM is still a very scarce commodity.

As final note, the CPU-support is restricted to the "supported feature set", so bear that in mind while preparing and sending your sessions for rendering on our farm.

Enjoy Cycles!

Renderfarm.fi goes Amiga! Nové okno

It is important for our values that we support as many platforms as possible. In addition to our current platforms of Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, we have decided to add support for some still strong but aging platforms. Today we finally finished our work on a the old Amiga raytracer "Traces" written by Ton Roosendaal in 1989 and our first renders are now rolling. Please report if you have any problems with the clients on your Amigas, and remember that no-one needs more than 16MB of memory!

You can check out the first test render ever over here!

Network migration: project offline a few days / Cambio de la conexión del servidor, proyecto fuera de linea unos días Nové okno
We are going to migrate our laboratory's Internet connection from the current ADSL line to the high speed dedicated University's network. This means that the project will be off-line a few days. / Vamos a migrar la conexión a Internet de nuestro laboratorio de la línea ADSL actual a la red de alta velocidad de la universidad. Esto significa que el proyecto estará fuera de línea unos días.

Renderfarm.fi at GDC and SXSW, Blender meeting! Nové okno

I'm happy to say that this year I'll be representing Renderfarm.fi at both the Game Developers Conference (San Francisco, California) and South by Southwest (Austin, Texas). In case you're heading to either of these two great venues, please do seek me out! At GDC you can find me best at the Finnish section of the Nordic Pavilion (North Hall, booth 1824), while at SXSW you can find me best from the stand of the Finnish Mobile Association (stands 1123, 1125). In case you do get to either venue you can pick up your copy of the free and now classic Renderfarm.fi poster "Join the Blender Army", proven to also be hanging on the walls of great studios like the Blender Institute and Energia:

Renderfarm.fi: Join the Blender Army

We'll be having a get together for Blender users at the Game Developers Conference on Thursday the 8th of March. Let's meet up at around 2PM at the Nordic Pavilion (North Hall, booth 1824) and move on from there if necessary. Similar meet up could be held at SXSW if enough Blenderheads show an interest. I know of at least two IRC #blender regulars who will be attending GDC with me, so the meeting's going to happen in any case. If you're there or even if you aren't but know of some Blenderhead who will - let them know!

Start of the project Nové okno
Dear All, We would like to announce some kind of reincarnation of VTU@Home project. Some of you may remember that project, which was created in 2006 by Aurimas Norkevičius (VGTU postgraduate student at that time). Over that time, several different applications in various fields were developed in VGTU Department of Mathematical Modelling. They have gained significant attention from BOINC volunteers. Project had almost 3.500 users, which was actually on the top of capabilities of available server. However, in late 2009 due to hard drive failure, all project data were unrecoverably lost… and we had no technical and human resources to continue. However, after two years, we have decided to recreate our BOINC project. We believe that in volunteer computing there is a place for true Olympic principles and spirit, and so we hope to find a place for our small academic project among the others. We start with cryptographic applications and hope to find scientists from our university and other Lithuanian academic institutions interested in solving their problems using this computational platform. In any case we believe that our project can contribute to popularization of ideas of volunteer computing in VGTU community. At this point, we would like to thank the users of VTU@Home for their contribution and apologize for the possibly lost work due to hardware crash. Old project’s database is lost. Therefore we do not announce the return of VTU@Home, but the start of “VGTU project@Home”. Furthermore, this project name indicates correctly the name of hosting institution, which was changed some time ago. With best regards, The Project Team.

Project News January 31, 2012 Nové okno
First, please excuse the long phase where we have reported nothing new. Thomas has become the successor of Mr. Hartmann and manages now the labs "Compuattional Science Lab" and "Technical Computer Science". This was and is a lot of work and therefore Spinhenge@home came a little bit too short. Second, the forum is now back online. It can be reached here. Third, we are currently reorganizing our software architecture for the client application which unfortunately takes much more time than planned. One thing is that we want to merge all input information in just one compact file, so that we can save space and time on your computers. Also, we are implementing several new functions. Most important for us now is a new method that allows us to simulate a magnetic nano system which is subject to a time dependent magnetic field. With this we are able to calculate the so-called AC susceptibility for a system which gives us information about its internal energy barriers. This property is vital for identifying so-called single molecular magnets (SMM). These SMM are candidates for future memory devices since they allow to store information in a much smaller space than conventional magnetic recording materials. The implementation of this method is not that easy and requires the numerical solution of stochastic differential equations which simulate the dynamics of the individual magnetic moments in a nano system. The first big chunk of this task is done and successfully tested (many thanks to Andrértmeier!). We hope to be able to do first test calculations using the new client application soon! Fourth, we are currently planning the reorganization of our server infrastructure. The three project server should run in the future in a virtual environment. Please keep fingers crossed! And thanks a lot for your patience! Kind regards, Christian Schrö der, Thomas Hilbig
